Moondog's Rhythm n Blues Party

Moondog's Rhythm n Blues Party what does it mean?

Moondog's R n B Party is a new DJ service offering a choice not normally heard in bars, clubs or party's across Ireland. It will focus on the amazing music from the genres of :

  • Blues & R&B - From 1940's to present day, from Roy Brown to Big Joe Louis, from Chicago to Texas, but also including modern artists clearly influenced by this most rooted of roots, eg The White Stripes, Alabama 3 etc.
  • Rock n Roll - From 1950's to now including Rockabilly and neo-Rockabilly, Doo Wop, & Straight up Rock n Roll, New Orleans to Memphis, Bill Haley to Stray Cats.
  • Soul & Funk - From the late 50's to now, Little Willie John to Sharon Jones, Memphis to Detroit, Southern to Blue eyed.
  • Country & Americana - 1940's to present day, Johnny Cash to Ryan Adams, Bluegrass to Honky Tonk, Nashville to Memphis.
  • Surf & Instrumental - 1950's to now, Bill Doggett to The Ventures, California to London.
  • Jamaican R & B and Ska - Clearly influenced by the sounds coming out of America in the 50's this sub genre of Rhythm & Blues deserves to recognised, from Kingston to Birmingham, the Skatalites to The Specials.
  • 1960's garage rock and UK R&B - San Francisco to Newcastle, The Strangeloves to The Rolling Stones.
  • Why call it "Moondogs Rhythm n Blues Party"?

Alan Freed's nationally syndicated radio show in the 1950's was called Moondogs Rock n Roll Party, and I am not trying to say I am another Alan Freed but I don't think there is any harm in wearing your inspirations on your sleeve. This is the man credited with inventing the term Rock n Roll by many (although this is a well disputed fact) and he also championed Rhythm n Blues records from the very start of his career in Cleveland. Indeed he became such an annoyance to established society in the US he was eventually destroyed in the Payola scandal while thousands of other DJ's who worked the same system remained untouched.

I would like to believe had Freed continued with his career and was still on the airwaves today (unlikely I know considering his likely age), the music I play reflects some of the sounds he would have gone on to embrace.

Why create Moondog's Rhythm n Blues Party?

Fed up with musical choices available on a Saturday night in urban Ireland, I thought to myself why don't I do something about it rather than moaning and putting up with it?

What qualify's me to be Moondog?

25 years of collecting music across all the genre's listed above, and a genuine love for all Roots music. I also have extensive experience of DJ'ing including 4 gigs at last years Blackstairs Blues Festival in Enniscorthy including the prestigious Press Launch.

What are my aims for Moondog's Rhythm n Blues Party?

Play a select number of gigs over the year to people who genuinely want to hear this music on social occasions. I will travel anywhere in the country if people are interested. I would like to play some other Festivals and meet other like minded souls. Spread the joy of this music and open some minds.
